Decoded 2024, Polkadot’s flagship event, brought together a diverse array of perspectives, including developers, investors, artists, business experts, industry leaders, and cryptocurrency enthusiasts, to discuss blockchain technology and create a roadmap for a free, open, and decentralized internet.
Decoded 2024: Keynotes
This year, Decoded focused on three critical themes for advancing the Polkadot ecosystem: technical innovation, real-world applications, and community-driven development. All three themes were prominently featured throughout the keynote speeches, interactive sessions, and panel discussions of the event. Decoded 2024 began with keynote addresses from two of Polkadot’s visionary leaders, Bjorn Wagner and Gavin Wood. Wagner, the CEO of Parity Technologies, was the first to speak, discussing development within the Polkadot ecosystem. He also highlighted that Polkadot processed and secured more transactions in the past year than in the previous three years combined.
“Over the last 12 months, more transactions have been processed and secured by Polkadot than in the combined previous three years. Additionally, since October of last year, the staking rate on Polkadot has increased once again. Now, this leads us to 850 million DOT, which you know is quite a significant financial security that ensures the integrity of the Polkadot ecosystem.”
The Parity CEO also emphasized his focus on fostering high-impact partnerships that promote engagement and adoption. These include collaborations with Mythical Games, Ledger, and Raise. Wagner was then joined by George Bousis, founder and CEO of Raise, as the keynote seamlessly transitioned into a panel discussion. The panel discussed the convergence of blockchain technology and the gift card industry and how Polkadot could address longstanding issues faced by traditional industries.
“There’s a trillion dollars in value transfer between brands and consumers every year in the gift card space, and what’s really staggering about this number is that brands know nothing about who these customers are or where this money is coming from. We were really intrigued by how this technology could be used in the gift card space to solve many of the issues that have plagued the industry for a long time regarding fraud, money laundering, and the fact that brands don’t know anything about who these customers are.”
Gavin Wood’s Address
Following was Polkadot founder Gavin Wood, who discussed Sybil resistance, the ability to prevent a single entity from creating multiple false identities.
“For the past two years, let’s say, I’ve been thinking about one of the very fundamental problems in this space, essentially, Sybil resistance. It arises everywhere. Blockchain systems rely on game theory, and often the way we think about games is that we need to restrict the number of players or manage the fact that they might be arbitrary in multiplicity.”
He also discussed the importance of differentiating between human users and automated systems in digital interactions, emphasizing how this could impact various aspects of blockchain technology, ranging from governance to resource allocation.
“I want to make it clear that I’m not talking about identity. It’s not about figuring out what a particular endpoint is in the real world, but rather being able to fundamentally distinguish between a device and a device that is currently being operated by a human.”
He concluded his talk by discussing JAM, which was introduced at last year’s Decoded. JAM aims to address scalability and interoperability challenges faced by current blockchain platforms. The Polkadot CEO highlighted JAM’s ability to significantly enhance compatibility between smart contracts across different chains. He also announced a JAM developer program through the Web3 Foundation, with 10 million DOT tokens available as rewards for teams creating production-ready JAM implementations in various programming languages.
Key Themes
Decoded 2024 revolved mainly around community-driven development, technical innovation, and real-world applications. During the event, Polkadot showcased its technical advancements through various teams in different sessions. The Tanssi session discussed how Polkadot is revolutionizing the application chain landscape, while Coretime: The First Step Toward Polkadot 2.0 addressed Agile Coretime. The Unified UX Strategy panel discussed creating a seamless and intuitive user experience across the Polkadot ecosystem.
Decoded 2024 also featured discussions on decentralized governance and its impact on the Polkadot ecosystem and community. It also presented real-world use cases across various sectors through a series of panels and discussions.
